ARCHIVED - 1772 new Covid positives in Spain on Wednesday and 2,953 in last 24 hours
The last time figures this high were recorded was at the end of April when Spain was still in lockdown
Daily figures published by the Spanish Ministry of Health on Wednesday 5th August report 1,772 new Covid positives during the last 24 hours in Spain (almost 600 more than the previous day, an increase of 66%).
In reality the figure is higher as Castilla La Mancha and the Basque Country have not provided data, in one case due to technical problems and in the second a local holiday.
Figures this high haven´t been recorded since the end of April when the entire country was still confined and there were still two weeks to go before the de-escalation plan began.
The confusing system used by the Spanish Ministry means that the figures shown above are only the cases “diagnosed in the last 24 hours” and the true rise in cases can only be detected by subtracting the total number of cases published yesterday from those published today.
Yesterday the official total was 302,814; today it is 305,767, so the actual increase is 2,953 for the last 24 hours. In addition, 25 people have died in the last seven days and one in the last 24 hours (in Madrid).

If that same principle is applied for the last 7 days, from Wednesday to Wednesday for example, the figures are 282,641 to 305,767, a weekly increase of 23.126 cases.
Aragon and the Region of Madrid are the two regions reporting the highest number of cases in the last 24 hours.
By region, the new cases reported for the last 24 hours are:

The Region of Madrid registered the only death from Covid reported today but the new infections of Covid-19 have shot up to 539 cases in the last 24 hours in the region, with four new outbreaks. In the last seven days the region has recorded a total of 2,685 positive cases.
The number of fatalities is still low nationwide (25 deaths in the last week), but the number of hospital admissions has increased substantially to 636 within the last seven days. These figures are still a long way from those recorded at the peak of the pandemic and the health system is coping at the moment, but this still represents a threefold increase from the middle of July.
UK figures
The British Government reported 892 COVID-19 infections for the last twenty-four hours on Wednesday, compared to 670 the previous day, and 65 deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours. Since the pandemic began, 46,364 people have died in the UK.
