ARCHIVED - 17 arrested as police raid cannabis clubs in Murcia
Premises managed by users associations are found to be involved in selling drugs
17 people were arrested by the Policía Nacional in the city of Murcia on Wednesday during another of the sporadic clampdowns on cannabis clubs in the regional capital, with users being caught in the act of consuming marijuana on the premises.
The first raid took place at an establishment on the Carretera de Alicante, where a sign on the wall announced to customers that on Wednesdays and Saturdays free drinks were offered to customers in return for their “contribution”, referring to payment for a “dose” of marijuana. A dozen police officers stormed in at around midday and detained eight people – seven of them young men, some of whom had what appeared to be school bags with them, according to regional newspaper La Verdad – and confiscated 120 grams of marijuana and over 200 joints which were prepared and ready for sale.
Another 9 were arrested in similar circumstances during the afternoon at a different club in Calle Belén, in the south of the city centre, and on this occasion officers also confiscated a large knife and, bizarrely, four golf clubs.
The purpose of the raids, police sources are quoted as saying, was to clamp down on illegal activities at these establishments: while they pose as perfectly legal “cannabis users’ associations”, on many occasions they are actually used for small-scale drug dealing.
