ARCHIVED - 15th to 24th November, El Prado en Sedas embroidery exhibition at the Paso Azul museum in Lorca
Reproductions of works of art on the spectacular embroidered cloaks of the Paso Azul
2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the world-famous art museum of El Prado in Madrid, and the Paso Azul in Lorca is joining in the celebration with an exhibition of its spectacular silk embroideries entitled “El Prado en Sedas”.
Between 15th and 24th November a selection of exhibits can be visited at the Museo Azul de la Semana Santa (MASS) in Lorca in the old Convento de San Francisco. Here visitors can admire the attire worn by the twelve Nazarenes of the Virgen de los Dolores during the annual Semana Santa processions, seeing how paintings have been represented in exquisite embroidery, with each item being shown alongside a photograph of the original work of art on which it is based.
In addition, a series of three thematic tours of the permanent collection of the MASS museum are being held on 19th November (the exact date of the bicentenary of the Prado) and again on 22nd and 24th November.
Nine of the 12 works of art reproduced on the Nazarene embroideries of the Paso Azul are exhibited at the Prado, among them four paintings by José de Ribera (La Trinidad, San Pedro Libertado por un Ángel, El Salvador and La Magdalena Penitente), two by Diego Velázquez (La Coronación de Virgen and Cristo Crucificado), two by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (La Anunciación and the Ecce Homo) and one by Rafael (La Caída en el Camino del Calvario, also known as El Pasmo de Sicilia). The other three are in the collections of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and the National Gallery in London.
In the case of Velázquez’s Cristo Crucificado, also on display is a painting created by the Paso Azul’s artistic director José López Gimeno as a model for the embroiderers to follow.
The MASS is open from Monday to Saturday between 10.00 and 14.00 and from 17.00 to 19.30, and on Sundays and public holidays from 10.30 to 14.00. Further information is available by telephone on 968 442077.
