ARCHIVED - 131 new cases of Covid in the Murcia Region this weekend
Mazarrón showed a significant increase on Sunday; Torre Pacheco and Caravaca have joined the outbreaks list
48 new Covid cases in Murcia Region on Saturday
83 new cases on Sunday
Total for the weekend: 131 new cases
On Monday morning the regional Covid Monitoring Committee meets to discuss the current Covid situation in the region, following the addition of 131 new cases to the regional active cases figures during the weekend, bringing the current active total to 688.
The Sunday figure is an unwelcome reminder of the initial increase in cases when the pandemic first began to really make its mark on Spain and to last see an increase of 83 it is necessary to go back to the 5th May.
Mazarrón remains the municipality in sharpest focus, the positives having increased by 25 during the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases registered in the municipality during the last week to 55 (the phase 1 restrictions returned to Totana when 52 cases were registered in the mmunicipality on 23rd July).
Although there appear to be multiple points of contagion in the municipality, the principal point of infection appears to be the agricultural company closed down on Thursday, which accounts for 30 out of the 55 cases.
The regional healthy authority is working through the known contacts of those infected in a bid to close down the infection and prevent it from spreading further.
Mayor Gaspar Miras said in an interview at the weekend that the situation is “preoccupying but not alarming” and that the “health authorities have the principal outbreak under control.”
Last Monday the municipality notified 19 cases, leading to fears that restrictions would be imposed to halt the spread of the virus, as has been the case in neighbouring Totana, but during the week there were days on which no further cases were recorded in the municipality and although the numbers crept up slowly throughout the week, the Mayor was confident enough that the situation was under control to launch a stinging public attack on the regional health minister for warning that further restrictions could be applied should the situation deteriorate further, a statement which the Mayor claims to have caused a raft of cancellations in the tourism-driven businesses of Mazarrón.
Mazarrón will undoubtedly be back on the table for discussion on Monday morning.
Murcia City is another problem which is increasingly demanding attention and remains the municipality with the highest number of cases in the region, due principally to the ripple effects of the “Bolivian outbreak” which in turn sparked off the “Atalayas outbreak” linked to the nocturnal leisure zone (which then caused the outbreaks in Totana and Lorca). Murcia added a further 21 new cases to its growing list on Sunday, but the situation in the capital is very different to that of Mazarrón, or Totana, due to the sheer impracticality of locking down the huge capital city and all of its outlying residential districts which stretches out to include Corvera airport within its boundaries. There are districts in which cases are clustered, but isolating them is a complex challenge and the population is so large; more than half a million compared to 30-35,000 as is the case in Mazarrón and Totana.
Totana added 4 new cases on Sunday. It was reported in La Opinión that on Saturday the Guardia Civíl was forced to intervene in a bar dispute in Totana, and that the bar owner was fined for not wearing a mask when the fight occurred as well as for exceeding the permitted opening hours.
Lorca added 8 more cases to its total on Sunday, Torre Pacheco has also appeared in the list of outbreaks with 5 cases in the last 24 hours and Caravaca de la Cruz also has an outbreak with 3 cases.
These figures do not include the four positives detected in the latest wave of irregular Algerian migrants who appeared in small boats at the weekend; these will be added into the Monday totals.
At the end of the weekend the situation is as follows:
Active cases: 688.
Total cases to date: 4,246 (2540 diagnosed by PCR swab test, 1706 using antibody test).
628 people in home isolation; 60 in hospital and 2 in intensive care.
Fatalities: 151 (this figure remained the same throughout July).
Cured: 1701(only patients tested by PCR are included in this list).
Total tests to date: PCR 98,655; Antibody test 63,776.
