ARCHIVED - 13 Spanish airports can receive international flights but NOT tourists
The list has already been amended three times since Saturday!
The list of Spanish airports that will be permitted to receive international flights has continued to grow since an order by the Ministry of Transport that limited the entry points by plane to just five airports came into force yesterday.
On Friday five airports were designated as the only entry points by air which would be permitted to receive international flights, but on Saturday Minister José Luis Ábalos announced that there would be ten.
Then on Sunday, the Government made another change and announced that three more would be included in the list.
The airports now designated are Madrid-Barajas, El Prat in Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife South, Alicante, Seville, Menorca, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Valencia.
Corvera airport in the Region of Murcia is not included in the list, so is effectively closed.
The idea behind the designation of specific airports as entry points to Spain is NOT to facilitate tourism, but to “minimize the risks of importing cases of Covid-19 which could jeopardise the de-escalation process” by limiting the number of entry points.
These airports have been selected for their “capacity to offer emergency health attention for travellers” and their capacity to control the entry of travellers.
Unfortunately some social media users have mis-interpreted the news as meaning that tourists are once again able to fly to Spain as they now believe that “Alicante is open again…….”
This is NOT correct. NO TOURISTS ARE PERMITTED TO FLY TO SPAIN AT THE MOMENT. The airports are only open for re-patriation flights and indeed most airports have no flights at all coming in as so few airlines are flying to Spain. This week for example, Valencia has just one flight scheduled and Alicante has none.
The temporary restriction of non-essential trips to Spain from countries of the European Union and associated Schengen countries for reasons of public order and public health has been extended to June 15th.
ALL passengers landing at these airports are obliged to self-quarantine for 14 days, but this does NOT mean tourists can come in and self-quarantine. ONLY those with Spanish residency are permitted to enter the country and return to their habitual palce of residence. Property owners who do NOT have residency are not permitted to enter the country until after the 15th June. It is highly likely that this date will be extended as the current date for the end of the de-escalation process is provisionally set for the 22nd June, although again, this may continue into July.
The government has also designated specific ports with international public health emergencies capacity to receive foreign passengers and ro-ro ships originating at foreign destinations. These are Vigo, Barcelona, Bilbao, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife and Valencia. Again, the ports are NOT accepting tourist traffic.
