ARCHIVED - 120 furtive fishermen face fines after being caught in the act in La Manga
The anglers were caught fishing in the Canal del Estacio between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean
A week-long series of inspections by the Guardia Civil and staff from the regional government of Murcia in the Canal del Estacio, between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean in La Manga, have resulted in 120 unauthorized fishermen being identified.
The fishermen were spotted fishing in an area where angling is not permitted, and in consequence face fines of between 301 and 60,000 euros.
The inspections took place after videos were published on social media showing numerous people casting their lines in the area, and although the people identified were all individual citizens the possibility that they may have been selling their catch on illegally without the necessary public health checks being performed has not been ruled out. All fish confiscated have been destroyed and the fishing gear impounded.
Following the campaign, the Guardia reminds the public that not only is fishing in restricted area harmful to the local ecosystem, in places such as the Canal del Estacio it can also be dangerous as the canal is used by numerous boats. In this context it has also been stated that the area will continue to be monitored in the future.
