ARCHIVED - Mar Menor activates emergency protocols ahead of projected rains on Friday
Aemet has issued a yellow alert warning for 30mm in the Campo de Cartagena
The major storm system moving across Spain is expected to reach the Murcia region during Thursday, with the bulk of the rain expected to fall on Friday.
Up to 50 litres (50mm) of rain could fall a 24 hour period in the Vega del Segura (which runs along the river valley of the River Segura) and the Guadalentín Valley, which runs through Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca, and 30mm in the campo de Cartagena (the area around the Mar Menor and inland to Torre Pacheco). Interior areas of the region are expected to experience some rainfall, but not as much.
Aemet has issued a yellow alert warning for Friday and at the moment this is expected to adequately reflect the anticipated level of rainfall, but should it be necessary to upgrade the warning, this will be done as the situation develops.
The General Directorate of the Mar Menor has activated its protocols for action in episodes of torrential rains given the forecast of abundant rains in the Region between Thursday evening and throughout the day on Friday, and has reminded both municipal councils and the agricultural sector of the conduct to be followed in these circumstances.
The Ministry of Agriculture has specifically warned that slurry and other manure with fertilizer value may not be applied to the soil, when an AEMET rain alert is activated in the area.
There is always concern during heavy rainfall that agricultural run-off water could be carried down into the Mar Menor, laden with harmful nitrates.
The statement from the General Directorate of the Mar Menor recalls that the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has announced “that the deepening of a storm west of the peninsula, and its progressive displacement towards the east through the south of the peninsula and North Africa, will end up affecting the Region of Murcia with precipitations that may be locally strong and even occasionally accompanied by storms, mainly on Friday ”.
"The amounts that can be accumulated in 24 hours, although there is always a lot of uncertainty about this variable, could be 20-30 mm around the Mar Menor, always with all the uncertainty associated with precipitation", concludes the forecast of AEMET.
